April 22, 2024

When I was a child, I told my mother I wanted to be an author. Her immediate response was, "Well, you're going to need another job. You can't just be an author." She meant that I would have to work while trying to become an author.

I learned later, though, that my mother thought I couldn't write. This was based on a paper I wrote in third grade while ill and, admittedly, I did not read the book the paper was about. She thought my paper, which was indeed gobbledygook, was awful and that I was never going to be a writer. She still thought that, even as I easily passed writing proficiency in high school (I got a 10 on a mock exam). It wasn't until she read the first book I self-published that she finally understood that I could write.

What does this have to do with anything when I haven't updated my blog in four years?

I got a job. Which means that I have been slacking off with writing. I still had writer's block as well. A few weeks ago I came up with, what I hope, is a great plot for book 4. I hope to get to writing again soon. I wrote a few years ago that I had written nearly a whole manuscript for book 4, but I had been forcing the characters and had to start over. I don't feel like I will be forcing the characters with this new direction.

September 15, 2020

It's already been nearly a year since I last updated this blog. I expect most people who have come across this site it was by accident, and that makes me okay with what I want to write about today.

Not long after my previous post, I began planning a vacation to Japan. I had wanted to visit Japan for at least twenty years (probably, most definitely, longer than that) and my third oldest sister said, "We have to go, soon." So, I planned our trip.

Late on the night of February 9th my sister and I landed in Osaka, Japan after a six-hour flight delay. We managed to take some of the last trains and made it to our hotel after midnight on February 10th. We spent five full days in Osaka before we spent a week in Tokyo.

I was so fired up to write when I returned home. I was going to finish book #4 in March. It was my goal.

Then, the lockdowns happened. Instead of being inspired I found myself with good old writer's block.

An update?

I feel like I might be able to write again soon.

Though - and this hard to write - three weeks ago, my oldest sister unexpectedly died.

I'm still in denial, but I know she's gone.

I was thinking of writing through my feelings, since grieving my sister is different than grieving the death of our father, but I think I'll just write how important my sister was to me.

I have three older sisters, I'm the baby. I've been close to each one of my sisters at different points in my life. My second oldest sister hogged me when I was a baby, so I usually say that's when we were closest. My third oldest sister and I are really close now and she's one of my best friends.

My oldest sister, who was eleven years older than me, was closest to me at a crucial time in my life: Junior High. Seventh grade was brutal for me. My best friends pretty much ditched me and I was hurt. I wasn't perfect with dealing with it, and I still cringe at some of the things I said, but I know I'm not the only one who had a miserable seventh grade year. There’s just something about seventh grade.

My sister worked at the school I attended. I went to a K-8th grade school. She was the fifth-grade teachers' aide. We would listen to Natalie Imbruglia, Third Eye Blind, and Matchbox Twenty when she drove me to school. She was a champion for her sisters. If anyone was going to be mean to us, she had our backs. She wasn't the aide during my recesses, but if she was filling in for another aide, I was always happy. She gave the girls who gave me problems an awesome glare that made them know, "Don't mess with my sister." She really helped me through that year and eighth grade too.

My sister won a trip to Florida a few years ago. It was trip for two, so I decided to go with her. We went on the trip in 2018. I'm really happy we had that trip.

My sister liked my books, though I only know for a fact she read the first one. I asked her on that Florida trip if I could name a character in a book after her at some point. She didn’t like her first name and always went by a shorter version of it, but I love her first name and wanted to know if it would upset her if I used it.

She told me I could use it and I will.

I have written 3/4 of book #4. It's coming along...slowly. I have written a lot I am proud of, but I am worried about forcing my characters into situations they are fighting me on (fellow writers, you know what I mean). "I don't want to do that!" they are screaming at me.

I have also started a non-fiction book I may or may not self-publish.

My first update since Google+ ceased to be.

Writing has been slow.

That's about it. I hope to have a better update soon.

December 11, 2018

It took a bit longer than I had hoped, but book #1's 2nd edition is finished and available.

The 2nd edition contains fixed typos (though I'm sure I still missed some 😕), as well as changes in descriptions, days and dates, and a few other odds and ends to make sure book #1 fits well with books #2 and #3.

Now, book #4 has been giving me headaches, but I had an epiphany the other day. I realized what I should be doing, and, like usual, I'm excited about what I've figured out. However, this has created a situation where I am now working on book #4 and two spin-off books.

Happy Halloween! 🎃

Autumn is here! It's one of my favorite seasons (along with winter, spring, and summer - seriously, I can't choose 😊).

I recently completed a chapter for book #4 that was difficult to write. It's going to need a lot of work. With the first draft of that chapter completed, though, I’ve made a breakthrough. Hopefully the rest of the book will be easier to write.

I’m also working on a second edition of book #1. While it still won’t be perfect, there have been changes I’ve been wanting to make for quite some time.

For Halloween, I thought I’d post a Halloween memory from my childhood.

When I was five or six, one of my older sisters (I have three) was in charge of taking me trick-or-treating. My costume was a princess. I was a princess quite a bit for Halloween, whether it was a generic costume, or an official Disney Snow White costume, that was my go-to disguise.

I’m a shy person to strangers. I’m loud, opinionated, and obnoxious to friends and family, but if I don’t know you I’m not someone who can easily go up to people and start a conversation. (As a child, we have the luxury of adults recognizing that we’re shy, but as an adult I just look grumpy and angry to strangers.) What does this have to do with trick-or-treating? If I went up to door by myself, I had the hardest time saying, “Trick or treat!” I remember just mouthing the words a lot. Even though I didn’t like strangers, Halloween was the one night I felt perfectly fine attaching myself to a group of children I didn’t know and following them up to the door. I stood in the back and let them do the work as I mouthed, “Trick or treat!” before accepting my treat. The biggest downside to it all is that, since I was too shy to say, “Trick or treat!” I was also too shy to say, “Thank you.” I was absolutely thankful, so right here, right now, I want to say, “Thank you,” to all my neighbors (even those who gave away pencils, toothbrushes, or pennies 😉).

Back to the Halloween when my sister took my trick-or-treating. I don’t know how far she took me, I don’t know how long I was trick-or-treating. All I remember is that I had to go up to doors by myself. She wasn’t going to take me, and I was confused. Mom would at least take me up to the door. Well, if there was no group of other children for me to attach myself to, I had to suck it up and go for it. I may not like to do things on my own, but if I must, I will (especially if candy is involved). I mustered up my courage and knocked on doors or rang doorbells. I probably still mouthed or whispered, “Trick or treat!” but I did it!

And then, I saw them. Two teenage boys. Their costumes? Bloody victims from slasher movies. I was scared!! I don’t know if my sister knew these boys, they must have been around her age, but I was NOT going up to any door with them. I tried to tell my sister. I protested. We had caught up with them and she sent me up to the next door with them. At this is house I know FOR SURE I didn’t say, “Trick or treat!” for I just stared at these boys, wearing the scariest costumes I had ever seen. I don’t even know if I collected my candy (almost positive I did, though – I mean, I needed a reward after that).

This Halloween memory has always stood out in my mind and I wanted to share it for fun and nostalgia.

Have a safe night everyone!

July 27, 2018

Haven't posted an update in awhile.

I've been having fun with writer's block!! Yay!!!

Although, I'm writing again.

Book #4 and the spin-off are still very much in the works.

March 6, 2018

So, I've made substantial progress on book 4, yet my characters are fighting with me. I've written scenes I don't want to just throw away, yet I just might have to. I seem to always reach this stage. I've nearly written the whole thing and I'm not feeling it - my characters aren't feeling it.

Rather than scrap the whole thing, I'm going to take some time away from it.

While I'm doing that, I'm going back to an older story of mine that I've always liked. I'm setting it in the same universe as Kavanagh Supernatural Investigators and am excited to go back and *hopefully* make the writing more mature. It's not like my writing is the best, but looking over this final draft from ten years ago is making me cringe 😊.

Happy Halloween month!

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the decorations. I love the weather. I love the leaves as they change color and fall. My neighborhood is getting in the spooky spirit and it's wonderful!

Book update: I'm making excellent progress on book #4. I've written some scenes I love that may end up being cut someday, but maybe not. Sometimes I wonder if I write too much information. I want the reader to want to read about these characters because they care about them. The reader doesn't need to know every little thing, though, so I'll have to hope my judgement is okay.

I've updated the links to the right with Amazon links 😌.

My editor/logical advisor (aka one of my sisters) only proofread half of it, so I hope there aren't too many logical mistakes in the second half of the book. I hope this is book is entertaining to those who enjoy the genre.

Book #3, Zeke's Case, is up at the CreateSpace store! I will update the links for Amazon and Kindle tomorrow. I have proofread this book so many times that it will be embarrassing when I catch more mistakes, but so be it.

Now I will continue my work on book #4 without feeling like I'm cheating on book #3 😉.

Almost there...

Book three is nearly done. I have to go through it one more time and *hopefully* it will be ready.

Books one and two will be offline for a day (maybe two).

I started work on book four... and then I started work on book four again.
I've played with at least five different beginnings and I think I've finally found the point at which I'm supposed to begin.

Thank you to the five (I'm probably shooting too high with that figure, but, oh, well) people who have read my book! I really do appreciate it. 😊

January 16, 2017

Book three is still in the editing stages. As for book four, I wrote about 3/4 of it before I knew it wasn't working and am back at square one.

I managed to read a lot in 2016. I'm most excited that I finally read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I was really happy that I enjoyed them. I began reading LoTR when I saw The Fellowship of the Ring in the theater, but put it down not long after. It was in my things fifteen years before I picked it up again last December. I managed to finish reading LoTR right before the fifteenth anniversary of FoTR coming out in theaters. I used to always say my favorite character is Merry. I liked him as a character in the movies and I'm a Dominic Monaghan fan. Now that I've read the book, I know I'm a Pippin fan. Bilbo Baggins would be my favorite The Hobbit character. Taking The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings as a whole, my absolute favorite character is Gandalf.

If anyone reading this wants to brag about their favorite book and favorite characters, feel free to post about them in the comments.

Just a quick update.

I'm very nearly done with a complete draft of book #3, Zeke's Case! I'm at the important climax of the book and am excited to finally write down scenes I've had in my head for years.

May 17, 2016

I'm making slow progress with book #3, but I've come up with some great ideas and I look forward to using them. I'm about halfway done and I feel a lot better about this draft than the first one.

I've been reading a lot lately. I borrowed some of my sister's Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys from the '80s. Now I'm reading a few titles from the older series. I have a bit of a crush on Joe Hardy. I've finally read The Hobbit and enjoyed it. Also, I read a series from the '80s called Couples. Couples is a lot of fun, but the books lost their charm near the end. Even as an adult I enjoy them, but I imagine they're more fun to read as a pre-teen or teenager.

Some authors I like are W. Somerset Maugham and Keigo Higashino. I first began reading W. Somerset Maugham's works when I watched the movie The Razor's Edge on Fox Movie Channel a long time ago (at least over ten years ago). I like his writing because he knew how people think and represented them realistically in his novels. Keigo Higashino is a famous mystery writer in Japan and his novels are slowly being translated into English. A number of his works have been adapted into television series and movies in Japan and I've seen quite a few of them. The translations are easy to read and his stories grab you instantly. The few novels of his I've read, I've found hard to put down once I get started.

I just felt like promoting some things I like. There you have it.

February 9, 2016

Hello!

I haven't been writing lately. I've been sick, but now I'm feeling better and I'm looking forward to returning to my imaginary world. I do love the characters I've created and I've missed them. Book three was coming along all right before I became ill, but since I've had time to think about things I know there's some re-writing I'll have to accomplish with the beginning chapters. It's nothing new for me to restart a few times (or more than a few times), so I'm not discouraged.

I know that not that many people have read my book (I think I can count the amount of people using both my hands) and I don't even think any of the people who have read my book visit my blog (because I've just recently added the link address in my self-published book), but no matter how you've stumbled upon this blog I welcome you. If the plot of my book interests you I hope you'll consider buying it. Becoming an author has always been my dream and if self-publishing has made that happen, I'm happy. I don't know if I'll ever get to a point where this can be my career, but I won't give up my dream.

Sorry for that little sentimental paragraph. Anyway, no matter what book you're reading right now I hope you're enjoying the journey.
